Six TCU students across five colleges have received the nationally competitive Gilman Scholarship, which supports a summer or semester-long experience abroad.

Awarded annually since 2001 by the U.S. Department of State, the Gilman Scholarship encourages students to develop skills essential to the United States’ national security and economic prosperity as well as supports study abroad in over 170 countries.

“The Gilman Scholarship is a vital award that encourages students to study abroad and reap the numerous benefits that come with it,” Tracy Rundstrom, Ph.D., director of nationally competitive scholarships, said. “TCU's six Gilman recipients are embarking on journeys to various countries, where they will enhance their skills and gain meaningful experiences.”

To support students through the application process, Rundstrom provides guidance and feedback. This year’s winners also received support from TCU Global and the William L. Adams Center for Writing.

The scholarship is named for Benjamin Gilman, who served from 1973 to 2003 in the House of Representatives and for many years on the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Since its inception, the Gilman Scholar program has supported over 44,000 students.
